Montgomery County Recreation announces the opening of its fifth senior center located in the White Oak Community Recreation Center, 1700 April Lane, Silver Spring. The center shares state-of-the-art amenities with the community center, including two full-size gymnasiums, spacious social hall and expansive art and crafts facilities. The senior center is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and beginning in January will extend its hours to Monday through Friday.
The new senior center will offer programming that emphasizes fitness, socialization and wellness. Some of the upcoming classes for active, senior adults include Tai Chi and Zumba Gold. Other activities will focus on health awareness and prevention services such as blood pressure checks, flu shots, nutrition services and glaucoma screenings. During September, which is National Fall Prevention Month, the center will hold special events, activities and information sessions on how to minimize fall risks.
“As the County moves toward an increased population of residents over the age of 55, our department is proactively shifting services to better serve the needs of baby boomers and seniors,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Gabriel Albornoz. “The White Oak Senior Center will bring progressive programming that provides our residents active lifestyle options that are important for overall health and well-being.”
Montgomery County Recreation has five centers dedicated to senior programming and nine 55+ Active Adult Programs that provide senior services to residents at their local community centers.
