|County, City of Rockville Unite to Request Support for Long-Awaited Rockville Town Center Mixed-Use Development Project To Feature Cambria Suites Hotel Adjacent to Choice Hotels International’s New Corporate Headquarters|
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett was joined this morning by County Councilmember Phil Andrews; Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio; Montgomery County Department of Economic Development Deputy Director Sally Sternbach; Michael Murphy, Senior Vice President of Upscale Brands, Choice Hotels International; and Marc Dubick, President, Duball, LLC to announce his transmittal this week of a request to the Montgomery County Council to appropriate and disburse a $4.16 million conditional grant from the County’s Economic Development Fund to Duball, LLC to support the redevelopment of a surface parking lot in the heart of Rockville Town Center into a vibrant, mixed-use development.
“Duball Rockville, LLC’s impressive mixed-use project in the heart of Rockville Town Center, just steps from the Rockville Metro station, is the exact type of smart-growth development we love to see in Montgomery County,” said Leggett. “Montgomery County’s and the City of Rockville’s financial support will help jump-start this project, which was a critical component in Choice Hotels’ decision to build their new headquarters here, knowing they would have a view of their new Cambria Suites hotel right across the street.”
“The County’s and City’s financial support is critical for this project’s commencement and we are very appreciative of their support,” said Dubick. “We believe this mixed-use project featuring a long-anticipated hotel, along with new residential and retail development, will be a great compliment to the existing amenities already found in Rockville Town Center.”
“The construction of this Cambria Suites hotel in the center of Rockville, along with our new global headquarters, really cements Choice Hotels International’s commitment to the City of Rockville and Montgomery County,” says Michael Murphy, Senior Vice President of Upscale Brands for Choice Hotels International. “Cambria Suites is quickly becoming one of Choice Hotels’ flagship brands. Having one located just steps from our new global headquarters in Rockville Town Center will be a visible reminder of how we strive to offer our best to everyone with whom we do business – our developers, franchisees, guests and communities.”
Construction on the first phase is expected to begin by the end of this year and will include approximately 263 residences – of which 40 will be earmarked as Moderately Priced Dwelling Units – a Cambria Suites hotel, and 17,000 square feet of street level retail plus public and private parking.
“Many of us have watched over the past decade as downtown Rockville has evolved from a place with empty lots and minimal retail opportunities into dynamic place that is now a destination for people throughout the region,” said Andrews. “On weekends, downtown is thriving, thanks to the partnership between the City of Rockville, Montgomery County and the State of Maryland. Choice Hotels joined this transformation by building its headquarters here and now, with the addition of a new hotel, both Choice franchisees and visitors to the area will be able to stay in downtown Rockville.”
“This new complex, which will not only include a hotel, but also moderately priced dwelling units, retail and parking, will be a wonderful addition,” continued Andrews. “I look forward to working with all of the parties involved to help it become a vital part of Rockville Town Center.”
“The success of Rockville Town Center becomes more apparent today in that not only do we have the headquarters of Choice Hotels International but will soon welcome their newest flagship brand – an upscale Cambria Suites hotel,” said Marcuccio. “The hotel is a central component to this next, major mixed-use project in the downtown and it, along with the new residential and retail development, will help boost our local economy and add another top-notch dimension to an already thriving town center.”
