Montgomery County will celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Tribute and Musical Celebration on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3 p.m., and a Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 9 to 11 a.m.
The Tribute and Musical Celebration will be held at the Music Center at Strathmore beginning at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and will be available on a limited basis at www.strathmore.org, beginning December 21.
The Day of Service activities include the annual program held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional service project sites around the County. There will also be a countywide food drive to benefit the Manna Food Center the weekend preceding MLK Day.
Help the Hungry Food Drive
The countywide “Help the Hungry” food drive to benefit the Manna Food Center will be conducted at 27 Giant locations in Montgomery County on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20. Groups are encouraged to “adopt a store” for one day or both days to help Manna collect food donations. Day of Service Activities
The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is organizing and coordinating indoor family-friendly service projects at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center. The volunteer projects are all approved for Student Service Learning hours. For more information, and to pre-register, visit www.montgomeryserves.org.
Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, North Bethesda – 9 to 11 a.m. Activities include decorating cards for troops, assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for local shelters, constructing fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice and packing snow day boxes for Meals on Wheels. Various agencies will be present at the Volunteer Fair for anyone wishing to learn more about ongoing volunteer opportunities in Montgomery County. Non-perishable food items will be collected at this site for Manna Food Center to distribute to those in need.
Musical Celebration – 3 p.m.
The Tribute and Musical Celebration – “HIS dream.iAct.WE change!” -- will take place on Sunday, January 20 at the Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda beginning at 3 p.m. The event will feature musical and dance acts, and the 2013 recipients of the Children of the Dream, Humanitarian and Literary Arts Awards will be announced.
The annual celebration is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and may be reserved beginning December 21 through Strathmore’s website at www.strathmore.org (go to Events and Tickets), via phone at 301-581-5100 or in person at the Strathmore box office. For individuals unable to secure advanced tickets, a stand-by line will begin at 2 p.m. outside the Music Center the evening of the performance. No lines may form before the designated time. At 2:45 p.m. all tickets are null and void and patrons in the stand-by will be allowed entry subject to available seating. Sign language interpretation will also be available.
