|Montgomery County has Highest Waste Diversion, Recycling Rates in Maryland|
According to the Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) Calendar 2011 Maryland Waste Diversion Rates & Tonnages, Montgomery County has the highest recycling rate (57.68 percent) and waste diversion rate (62.68 percent) of all jurisdictions in the state.
The Maryland Recycling Act (MRA) requires all Counties and Baltimore City to recycle 15 or 20 percent of their municipal solid waste, depending on population, and report annually to the state. Results are tabulated and published by MDE.
“The comprehensive waste reduction and recycling programs we offer allow our single-family residents, multi-family (apartment and condominium) properties, and businesses to reduce waste, reuse, and recycle a very long list of materials that we generate,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “However, this recycling achievement is also due to the keen awareness about the importance of reducing waste and recycling more, and the outstanding commitment and continued efforts of everyone living, working and visiting Montgomery County.”
Leggett also noted that “We continue to look for ways to expand our recycling programs and provide more opportunities for everyone to recycle additional materials, in order to bring about even higher recycling achievement for the future.”
Ongoing participation in recycling initiatives by residents, employees and others is critically important as the County strives to achieve its goal to reduce and recycle 70 percent of the waste stream by 2020. The new recycling goal, established in 2012, is the highest in the region, and among the highest in the nation.
