"A grateful County thanks the officers of the Montgomery County Police for their professionalism and their courage in handling today's hostage crisis in Silver Spring. Discovery Communications worked effectively to evacuate their building and assisted officers on the scene. And I appreciate the assistance of the other law enforcement and public agencies who cooperated in the operation.

"Although there was loss of life, I know that the outcome could have been even more tragic but for the efforts of our Montgomery County Police."
