How to recycle/dispose of propane / helium / other tanks

Curbside collection: No
County facilities accepting propane / helium / other tanks:
* Shady Grove Processing Facility & Transfer Station

What is accepted?

We accept propane tanks at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station.

  • Tanks/cylinders must be 20 pounds or less in size.
  • There is no fee for tank disposal

At the Transfer Station, follow the signs for "Recycling". Please speak to the Recycling area attendant for specific instructions on where to place your tank.

Sorry, propane tanks (and other pressurized metal containers) are not accepted in Montgomery County's curbside blue bin collection, or in its curbside scrap metal recycling collection to avoid explosion risks.

Whenever possible, please return propane, helium, SCUBA and other tanks to the vendor or supplier from which you obtained them for reuse. If you can't return the tank, please try to use up the contents so the tank is no longer under pressure. If the valve can be broken off, please do so.

What is not accepted?

We do not accept these types of cylinders or tanks:

  • home or commercial oxygen
  • commercial acetylene
  • propane tanks larger than 20 pounds
