How to recycle/dispose of smoke alarms / carbon monoxide alarms

Curbside collection: Weekly - trash
County facilities accepting smoke alarms / carbon monoxide alarms:
* Shady Grove Processing Facility & Transfer Station

While there is indeed radioactive material in a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm/detector, it is extremely weak. Therefore, it may be safely disposed of in the regular household trash.

Some alarm manufacturers will take their own products back, but will not take products made by other companies. The postage is at the consumer's expense.

Please do not bring smoke or carbon monoxide alarms to our electronics recycling events. Our electronics recycling contractor does not handle items with radioactive elements.
