New, green David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operations Center opens in Rockville

County Executive Leggett recently celebrated the opening of the new Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operations Center in Rockville. This is part of his Smart Growth Initiative. It will relocate County facilities to create a transit-oriented urban village around the Shady Grove Metro Station.

The new operations center consists of 12 buildings and the largest salt barn east of the Mississippi! The complex was designed to achieve an environmental design “Gold certification”. It has a host of innovative features, including reuse of rainwater for toilet flushing and bus washing; solar panels; and green roofs. For more details, see the County's press release.

The center serves the Department of Transportation’s divisions of Transit Services and Highway Services and the Department of General Services’ Division of Fleet Management. The onsite facilities include administrative buildings; parking for 200 buses; bus service lanes; a bus wash facility; a fare collection area; bus service maintenance bays; a parts room; a heavy equipment storage shed; soil/gravel storage area; salt barn; Highway Services bays; compressed natural gas fast-fill, gasoline and diesel fueling stations; and employee and visitor parking.

The center is named for the late David F. Bone, who served as Ride On’s senior planner from its creation in 1973 until 2000. He was the chief architect of Ride On’s service philosophy, route design and structure. He created the concept of Ride On as a neighborhood feeder system to Metrorail and Metrobus. Mr. Bone was involved in every aspect of Ride On, including attending all public hearings, participating in union negotiations, developing strategic plans, and creating transit centers, such as those at Lakeforest and Montgomery malls and the Germantown Transit Center. Mr. Bone died in 2009.

Mr. Leggett also announced the acquisition of 40 new, clean diesel buses. Now, more than 75 percent of Ride On’s fleet runs on clean diesel, hybrid electric-diesel, or compressed natural gas.
