New bus rapid transit line connects Arlington and Alexandria

Route of the bus rapid transit line in Northern Virginia

Route of the bus rapid transit line in Northern Virginia

Public transportation is growing in the metro D.C. area. The newest addition is a rapid bus line in Northern Virginia called Metroway, which is basically a rapid transit service like that being proposed in various corridors of Montgomery County.. The bright blue buses in Virginia will run every 12 minutes on weekdays, 20 minutes on weekends, and late at night between the Braddock Road Metro station in Alexandria and the Crystal City Metro stop in Arlington.

The new transit service will begin August 23rd. Alexandria Mayor William Euille, who helped cut the ribbon today on Metroway today, expects the transit service will bring relief to traffic choked roads. "This will take maybe 400 to 500 cars on a daily basis off the roadway," said Mayor Euille.

Metroway buses will roll in dedicated bus lanes along part of congested Route 1. Besides providing a new ride, Mayor Euille predicts that the bus service will boost economic growth along Route 1. "This transit way, which is the first one of it's kind in the entire D.C. metropolitan region, will certainly be an inducement for folks to want to live along that corridor," Mayor Euille said.

Metroway is the newest addition to area mass transit options, including the Metro Silver Line, which opened last month stretching rapid rail to Reston, Va. Soon, streetcars will be carrying riders on D.C. streets for the first time in more than 50 years. The streetcars are currently undergoing test runs along H Street, Northeast.
