Federal delegation presents $40 million check to County for BRAC project

This past September, US Senators Mikulski and Cardin and US Representative Van Hollen joined local officials to present the County with a $40 million check to fund a major pedestrian improvement in connection with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.  This amount will supplement $28 million previously committed by the Department of Defense.  The money will now fully fund construction of three high-speed elevators on the Medical Center side down to the Metrorail platform, and an underpass below Rockville Pike.

The underpass will allow pedestrians and bus, carpool and bike commuters to travel safely between NIH, Metro, and the Medical Center.

The funds are being used to address traffic congestion resulting from the move of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center under the Base Realignment & Closure Act. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has acknowledged that the BRAC process increases personnel and traffic at communities where facilities are consolidated. Therefore, federal support was justified to ensure local transportation systems can safely handle the influx.
