County Executive Isiah Leggett is seeking applicants to fill an alternate position on the Property Tax Assessment Appeal Board. Each appointment to this Board is made by the Governor from a list of names nominated by the County Executive and approved by the County Council.
The Board is a State administrative agency which hears appeals of real property assessments determined by the Supervisor of Assessments, as well as appeals of tax credits and tax exemptions. The work of the Board requires knowledge of economics and real estate values. Board members may not be actively engaged in real estate sales or appraisal, and should not hold office with a party central committee.
The work involves: l) reading arguments and appraisals; 2) listening to oral arguments; 3) analyzing complex mathematical computations; 4) participating in decisions; and 5) writing opinions and explaining the decisions. The work requires: l) attention to detail; 2) thoughtful analysis of diverse issues; 3) ability to articulate that analysis in writing; and 4) general knowledge of both residential and commercial real estate in the County.
Members serve five-year terms and currently meet approximately four to six hours per day, four or five days per week. Compensation is $25 per hour up to six hours per day while the Board is in session. Members are required to complete an annual State financial disclosure statement.
