Questions for Agencies

What kind of agencies are eligible to register with the Volunteer Center and access the Language Bank?

Agencies must have IRS tax-exempt status in order to register with the Volunteer Center. This includes government agencies and private nonprofits. We must be able to verify the nonprofit status at www.guidestar.org, or with a letter of determination from the IRS.

My agency is already registered with the Volunteer Center, why do I have to go through another registration process to access the Language Bank?

The Language Bank is a password protected database. It includes contact information for each of our volunteers. We want to make sure that only those agencies that need the information, and understand how it is to be used have access the database.

Login Questions

Why do Montgomery County government staff log in differently from other nonprofit agencies?

County government staff can use their County maintained user name and password, the same one they use to log in to Outlook -- to access the Language Bank, as long as they are using a computer on the County Network. This makes the Language Bank accessible to all county staff as soon as they need it, they don't have to go through the Volunteer Center to get a password if they are working from within the county firewall.

What if a county staff person needs to use the Language Bank and they are not on the county network, for instance they are working from home or using a laptop?

The Language Bank can also be accessed via a password provided by the Language Corps Coordinator. Staff from nonprofit agencies, schools, and county government staff who may need to access the Language Bank outside the county network of computers should contact the Language Corps Coordinator, 240-777-2611 or LanguageBank@montgomerycountymd.gov, to get a password.

Why can county staff use their regular password to access their Outlook email account from outside the county firewall, but they can't use the same password to access the Language Bank outside the firewall?

Because there are program-specific firewall issues.
