Older Americans Month in Montgomery County – May 2010

'AGE STRONG!', 'LIVE LONG!'... Tuesday, May 4, the Montgomery County Council proclaimed May 2010 as Older Americans Month in Montgomery County. The Council recognized the Commission on Aging, established in 1967, for their efforts to improve conditions of the aging or elderly in the County; work toward elimination of restrictions that impede older citizens; and assist and stimulate all levels of government and the community to be more responsive to the needs of the County's older residents. SIEMENS AWARD WINNER – June 23, 2009
Winston Churchill High School environmental science teacher Gary Rodgers, left, was honored by the Montgomery County Council on June 23 after he was named Maryland state winner of the Siemens Award for his work in encouraging students Advanced Placement programs.
SIEMENS AWARD WINNER... Winston Churchill High School environmental science teacher Gary Rodgers, left, was honored by the Montgomery County Council on June 23 after he was named Maryland state winner of the Siemens Award for his work in encouraging students Advanced Placement programs. The Siemens Teacher Scholarship initiative, in partnership with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund, was designed to encourage minority students to consider careers teaching math and science. Students, teachers and schools are recognized for student participation and performance in Advancement Placement math, science and technology courses. Council Vice President Roger Berliner, on behalf of the Council, presented a proclamation to Gary—who spoke to the audience about his efforts.

HELP is on the way… Montgomery County Council Vice President Roger Berliner, left, joined Congressman Chris Van Hollen on April 14 to announce support for local and federal programs that will help residents retrofit their homes with energy-savings measures. The event, which also was attended by County Executive Isiah Leggett, was held at a Bethesda home that recently had improvements made following a home energy audit. The Montgomery Council has approved creation of a County Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) that will provide zero-interest loans to homeowners for energy improvements.

SENIOR FORUM IN BETHESDA… Montgomery County District 1 Councilmember Roger Berliner (second from right) and U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (right) were among the featured speakers on March 6 as more than 200 people came to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad for a free forum especially geared to senior residents. The forum, themed 'Security for Seniors in an Uncertain Time', also provided time for Councilmember Berliner and Senator Cardin to talk informally with attendees and learn more about the issues that most concerned Montgomery seniors. The afternoon also included more than two dozen informational booths on services available to seniors.

BLAIR HAS THE RIGHT FORMULA… The Montgomery County Council on Feb. 24 honored the Blair High School Science Bowl team that will compete in May in the National Science Bowl competition in Chevy Chase. The Blair team—which includes Jacob Hurwitz, Charles Kong, Anand Oza, Benjamin Shaya and Benjamin Shih—in January won the Maryland Regional Science Bowl. Elected officials, community groups and young people recently came together to announce the “Yes Montgomery Can!” campaign that kicks off on January 17. The grass roots movement involves government, businesses, the faith community, nonprofit community groups and MCPS student organizations to encourage County residents to help the county’s neediest families and individuals through food donations, volunteer opportunities and cash donations. Speaking is Britt Johnson, a Damascus High School senior and President of the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association. Standing behind her are County Council Vice President, Roger Berliner, County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Council President Phil Andrews.

OFFERING HELP… The Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group on Jan. 15 presented its climate protection report to the Montgomery County Council and County Executive Isiah Leggett. The report recommended measures that are amongst the boldest and most innovative in the nation, including 58 actions that can be implemented effectively to meet the County’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. The group adopted many proposals made by Councilmember Roger Berliner (making a point at podium), including a recent one to establish a Home Energy Loan.

RIVER ROAD RESCUERS HONORED… The Montgomery County Council and County Executive Isiah Leggett on Jan. 13 honored the six agencies whose personnel rescued stranded motorists after a 66-inch water main burst and flooded River Road in Potomac with a fast-moving torrent of water on Dec. 23. Some of those stranded were rescued by helicopter or swift boat. BATTERY PARK IMPROVEMENTS… Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner, whose District 1 includes the Bethesda area, addressed residents and community leaders of the Battery Park neighborhood on December 17th as County Executive Isiah Leggett introduced a revised process for rehabilitation and reconstruction of road and sidewalk improvements. The new process will have the County’s Department of Transportation (DOT) evaluating all 4,800 lane miles of County roads every two years to prioritize maintenance, rehabilitation and resurfacing efforts. At the ceremonies marking Battery Park as the first neighborhood to benefit from the new process were, left to right, County Executive Leggett, DOT Director Arthur Holmes and Battery Park Citizens Association President Sara Gilbertson. 'I am pleased that the County is improving the quality of roads and the quality of life in down-county communities that were previously neglected,' said Councilmember Berliner. 'The County’s new data-driven approach should ensure that other older neighborhoods get the attention and road improvements they deserve.'

SOLAR CHAMPION AWARD... On December 5th, Councilmember Berliner received the "Solar Champion Award from the Solar Industry Association of Maryland/Virginia/and the District of Columbia. This award was in recognition of the numerous legislative initiatives sponsored by Councilmember Berliner and his colleagues and passed to promote solar energy. These initiatives included property tax credits for installing solar panels on your home, preserving home owners rights to install solar panels, removing siting restrictions to make it easier to put up solar panels in your yard, and requiring the adoption of a Renewable Energy Action Plan for the County.

MOBILE FOR FOUR DECADES… The Montgomery County Council on Dec. 2 recognized the volunteers, supporters and staff of the Mobile Medical program for 40 years of providing quality health care to the uninsured, low income, working poor and homeless in Montgomery County. The program brings services to areas around the County via its mobile medical units. All three members of the Council’s Health and Human Services Committee joined in the presentation of a proclamation to MobileMed. TWO DECADES OF CARING IN BETHESDA… The Montgomery County Council on Nov. 18 recognized Bethesda Cares, Inc., on its 20th anniversary as a non-profit private agency serving the working poor and homeless in Montgomery County. The organization provides a wide range of critical services with minimal overhead. Councilmember Roger Berliner, whose district includes Bethesda, presented a proclamation on behalf of the Council. OPPOSING THE AMBULANCE FEE… Four members of the Montgomery County Council were joined by representatives of the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and community members on Nov. 18 to express their opposition to a proposed fee that would be charged for transporting patients in County ambulances. SUPPORTING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS... On October 30th, Councilmember Berliner was a “Celebrity Guest Bagger” at the Safeway on Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda. This effort was to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the donations that customers made during his time at the store were given to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and MedStar Breast Cancer Center’s research at Georgetown University Hospital.

Councilmember Berliner and his staff participated in the 22nd Annual Montgomery County Community Service Day on October 25th at Greentree Shelter. The Greentree Shelter, founded in 1983 in Bethesda, Maryland, serves as a transitional home for homeless families, primarily children with single mothers, and provides the basic support systems necessary for families to rebuild their lives. Councilmember Berliner and his staff spent several hours Saturday morning mulching a trail at the Greentree Shelter.

Supporting the Arts at Glen Echo... Councilmember Berliner attended a Member Donor event at the Glen Echo Partnership for the Arts, where he serves on the Board of Directors. On hand were local artists, and he was able to try his hand at sculpting.

RECOGNIZING RECOVERY MONTH… The Montgomery County Council on Sept. 23 recognized those dedicated to helping others recover from addictions and saluted some youngsters who were succeeding in their personal battles. The Council issued a proclamation in honor of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Councilmembers Duchy Trachtenberg (holding proclamation), George Leventhal (back, third from left) and Roger Berliner (back, third from right) led the ceremonies.

GOING GREENER IN BETHESDA… Downtown Bethesda continued its movement toward becoming a more environmentally friendly community on May 21 when nonprofit ‘Bethesda Green’ unveiled the first public urban recycling container in Montgomery County. Bethesda Green hopes to eventually place 25 to 35 recycling containers around the downtown area. Celebrating the dropping of the first bottle in the container at the intersection of Bethesda and Woodmont Avenues were, left to right, Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal; Seth Goldman, President and TeaEO of Bethesda-based Honest Tea; Councilmember Roger Berliner; Dave Feldman, the Bethesda Green implementation director and CEO of the Livability Project; and Stephen Greenhouse, a Bethesda resident and local co-sponsor of the first recycling bin.

MEETING THE (RECYCLING) CHALLENGE… The Montgomery County Council on May 13 honored the communities of Cabin John and Carderock Springs, which over a seven-week period in March and April entered into a friendly challenge to gather as much metal products to be recycled as possible. The ‘Scrap Metal Recycing Challenge’ focused on items that could be recycled, but that were not eligible for regular curbside pickup by Montgomery County’s Division of Solid Waste Services. The challenge resulted in 17 tons of metal collected for recycling. Councilmembers George Leventhal (second from left) and Roger Berliner (right) presented a proclamation of recognition to the communities, which were represented by, from left: Burr Gray, Tom Rojas, Ritch Kepler and Martha Donnelly. ACTION AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING… The Montgomery County Council is preparing a long-lasting Earth Day celebration as it prepares to act on April 22 on seven bills that would combine to form one of the nation’s foremost global warming programs by a county government. The comprehensive package includes 25 separate initiatives that would combat global warming on a variety of fronts. On April 18, Councilmember Roger Berliner (above), who first suggested the original legislation on Earth Day one year ago, talked about details of the legislation and urged governments throughout the Washington region to follow Montgomery County’s lead in protecting the environment.

THE VOTES ARE IN… The Montgomery County Council on March 11 honored Bethesda’s Sarah Boltuck, who, with the help of her father, Richard, and Maryland State Senator Jamie B. Raskin, led a campaign all the way to the Maryland State Board of Elections and the State Attorney General’s Office to secure the right to vote in the primaries for herself and others who would be 17 at the time of the Feb. 12 primaries, but 18 by the time of the Nov. 4 general election. Her efforts restored the right of suffrage in the critical Maryland primaries to at least 50,000 residents. Councilmember Roger Berliner presented the proclamation to Sarah.

ADVANCEMENT IN SCIENCE… The Montgomery County Council on Feb. 26, 2008 recognized students from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda for their victory in a battle of scientific and mathematical wits in the recent Maryland Science Bowl state championship. Whitman has now qualified to compete against 67 other teams in the National Science Bowl competition in Chevy Chase in May.
