Access to privately owned businesses, non-profit organizations, buildings and other facilities
The Americans With Disabilities Act is administered under the Department of Justice. Title III of the ADA prohibits discrimination based on disability in places of public accommodation (private sector businesses, non-profit agencies) and in commercial facilities. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on disability in housing. This means that most businesses, restaurants, movie theaters, professional offices, medical offices, stores, apartment buildings and other privately owned facilities should be accessible to persons with disabilities. For questions pertaining to access to privately owned facilities (buildings, offices, apartments or condominiums) or services, please contact the ADATechnicalAssistanceCenter at 800-949-4234 (V/TTY), website http://www.adainfo@transcen.org.
Discrimination complaints are handled by the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights (a questionnaire form, preliminary to a complaint, can be found here).
