  • TIME: 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

  • LOCATION: Wheaton High School Auditorium
    12601 Dalewood Drive, Wheaton

  • PURPOSE: Discuss need for relocation of fire station located at Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road. There will be an official presentation about relocation and site selection process and announcement of site selection.
Fire Station # 18, located at 12251 Georgia Avenue, Wheaton, must be relocated due to the State of Maryland’s need for road and transportation upgrades and enhancements in the area of Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue. In order to make the necessary changes to the intersection, the State needs to acquire nearby fire department property and relocate the existing building for creation of a ‘grade separation’ at Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road. Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) plans call for future Randolph Road traffic to pass underneath Georgia Avenue (MD 97) to improve traffic flow at this major intersection. This project is one of the County’s top priority State-funded highway projects.

A new fire station site was selected following a comprehensive site evaluation process coordinated by the Director of the Mid-County Regional Services Center. A site evaluation committee – comprised of Glenmont area residents and business owners, representatives of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), and representatives of other County agencies – had identified and evaluated several candidate sites and determined that a nearby Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) site best met the needs of both the community and fire department.

Montgomery County has selected a site located on the west side of Georgia Avenue, across from Glenallan Avenue, for relocating Fire Station #18. The site is on property of approximately 9 acres owned by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Approximately 3.5 acres of land is needed to accommodate the future one-story, 4-bay door fire station facility.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is a full spectrum life safety agency protecting nearly 1 million people who live and work in Maryland’s most populous jurisdiction. Under the direction of a County Fire Chief, the MCFRS is a combination system (career/volunteer), operating with a budget of about $180 million, comprised of nearly 1200 career uniformed personnel and professional civilian staff and an equal number of volunteers, nearly half of whom are actively involved in emergency response.

The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department was formally incorporated in 1925 and maintains four (4) fire-rescue stations, including Fire Station #18, located at Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue in Glenmont, Fire Station #5, located at Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road in Kensington, Fire Station #21 at Veirs Mill Road and Gaynor Road in Wheaton Woods and Fire Station #25 located at Bel Pre Road and Connecticut Avenue in Layhill. These fire stations, like all others in the County, are operated in conjunction with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

Montgomery County fire fighters and emergency medical first responders were called to assist on over 100,000 incidents in 2005. About one million fire and rescue personnel responded on emergency apparatus 250,000 times during the year. About 75 percent of all responses were medical or rescue incidents. Last year, Fire Station #18 handled just over 3000 calls for service. Although they are often called as first responders on medical calls, emergency medical services are handled by Wheaton Rescue – Rescue Company #2 and surrounding fire-rescue stations.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2006 there will be a Public Meeting regarding the relocation of Fire Station #18. The meeting will take place from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Wheaton High School Auditorium, located at 12601 Dalewood Drive, Wheaton. Area residents, business owners and all other interested persons are encouraged to attend. There will be a presentation by County Officials followed by questions and comments from those attending.

Any questions regarding the meeting may be referred to the Mid-County Regional Services Center at 240.777.8108
