Fire Chief to Walk to School with Gaithersburg Elementary Students

Firefighters Promote Pedestrian Safety

International Walk to School Day in Montgomery County, Maryland will be on Wednesday, October 4, 2006. Montgomery County Fire Chief Tom Carr and others will join students, parents, faculty and staff from Gaithersburg Elementary School, in Gaithersburg, as students walk to school in order highlight pedestrian safety.

The walk will begin at 8:15 a.m. at the Crestwood Apartments at 325 N. Summit Avenue, in Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg Elementary School is located at 35 N. Summit Avenue and has a school population of over 450 students. A news conference will be held around 9:15 a.m. at the school, following the walk. Local firefighters will join Chief Carr escorting the students to school. The news conference will focus on pedestrian safety, parent and child participation and staying fit and healthy by walking.

Pedestrian injury remains the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 5 to 14. The event is organized by the Montgomery County Safe Kids Coalition and the Federal Express Corporation. At least 20 other Montgomery County elementary schools, representing thousands of students, are participating in this county-wide program. Firefighters are expected to be participating at many of the other schools throughout Montgomery County.
