Howard County Man Arrested for Arson
Possible family dispute leads to fire near Brinklow
A 51 year-old Howard County man was arrested on Friday morning, December 15, 2006 for setting a fire to structure on November 28, 2006. Douglas Edward Williams, of Elkridge, Maryland was arrested and charged by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, Fire and Explosive Investigators at the Montgomery County Police Station in Rockville. He had been summoned to the police station to pick up property previously seized by Fire Investigators. He was arrested without incident.
Around 3:30 a.m. on November 28, 2006 units from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the report of a house fire in the 19000 block of Chandlee Mill Road, in Brinklow (Sandy Spring). A fire on the front porch of the house was quickly extinguished.
Fire Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set or arson. Accelerant Detection Canine (K-9) ‘Mira’ and partner were utilized as part of the investigation. Damage to the structure was estimated to be at least $5,000. Occupants were home at the time. There were no injuries. Witnesses and family members implicated Mr. Williams as a person of interest. The victim’s and Mr. Williams are cousins.
At the time, Mr. Williams was questioned by Montgomery County Fire and Explosive Investigators and Howard County Police at his Elkridge, Maryland residence. Again ‘Mira’ was utilized at the suspect’ residence and evidence was seized. On Friday, December 15, 2006, Mr. Williams was coming to the Montgomery County Police Station in Rockville in an effort to retrieve some of that property. He was arrested on a warrant for his arrest that had been issued last night, on Thursday, December 14, 2006.
Mr. Williams was arrested and charged by Montgomery County Fire and Explosive Investigators with First Degree Arson, Malicious Burning, Malicious Destruction of Property and Reckless Endangerment. Other Charges are pending. A bond hearing is being scheduled.
