74 Year-old Woman Dies in Apartment Fire

Second Residential Fire Fatality of Year

Around 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007 units from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to the report of an apartment fire at 8810 Bradford Road, in Silver Spring. First arriving firefighters discovered a fire in the bedroom of a second floor apartment. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. The fire was confined to the area of origin.

An occupant of the apartment was found deceased in the room of origin on a bed. The victim is identified as Rosa E. Garcia, age 74. She was pronounced dead on the scene and her body was transported to the Maryland Medical Examiner. A death investigation continues. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated to $6,000. Mrs. Garcia had lived at this residence for over 20 years.

Montgomery County Fire and Explosive Investigators believe a first floor occupant heard the muffled sound of a smoke alarm and went to investigate. Upon tracing the sound to a second floor apartment and smelling smoke, she attempted to alert the resident, however there was no answer. She called 911. Firefighters arrived several minutes later to find smoke coming from a second floor bedroom window. The victim's grown son, who shares the apartment, had left for work around 5:30 a.m.
