Come join members of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service - River Rescue and Tactical Services team as they demonstrate the dangers of frozen ponds, lakes and other areas of cold water. Team members will provide some general safety guidelines for use by winter recreation enthusiasts to lessen their chances for an icy dip or worse.
The thickness of ice on ponds and lakes depends upon water currents, depth and natural objects. Daily changes in temperature cause the ice on ponds and lakes to expand and contract, which affects its strength. The only safe ice is at a skating rink!
