Montgomery County CERT Team Travels to Haiti

Fire Rescue Chief Richard Bowers announced today that a team of Montgomery County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers will travel to Haiti for ten days in June teaching first aid and disaster response skills to local Haitians in two cities.

The team is led by CERT Program Manager Greg St. James and includes CERT instructors Steve Lichtenberg, David Smith, and John Kolm. The team will be in Brossier and Montrouis Haiti from June 15-25. “The objective is to offer a ‘train the trainer’ style learning program in basic disaster response and triage,” said Fire Chief Richard Bowers. “The ‘Train the Trainer’ program has proven to be a very effective and sustainable learning model and the need for this type training in Haiti has never been so acute.”

The Montgomery County CERT Volunteers are raising their own funds for this mission, with generous donations to date by local Rotary groups. The Montgomery County team is being joined by Cathy Anthofer of Indiana who led the first ever CERT training in Haiti in 2004. For additional information, please visit
