The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) is partnering with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Sports Academies and the Task Force on Mentoring as part of an on-going commitment to give area youth opportunities to participate in activities that will enrich their lives. The successful program and partnership will be highlighted during the second annual flag football tournament at Blair High School.
Last year, the program brought 120 students together to participate in the football tournament with MCFRS employees. The goal of the program is to introduce students to career opportunities while emphasizing education, teamwork and leadership development. This year’s tournament expects 200 student-athletes with roughly 10-15 area high schools being represented.
During the opening ceremony on Wednesday November 24th, two participants from last year’s tournament who went on to enroll in the Fire and Rescue High School Cadet Program will be speaking about the importance of the mentorship program. Cadet Flores and Motuma are currently attending the Fire and Rescue cadet program at the Public Safety Training Academy while also attending high school.
Each participant will receive a package containing information on career and volunteer opportunities, the high school cadet program and an invitation to schedule a ride along. They will also receive information on how they can get matched with a mentor. MCFRS career employees will be participating in the tournament by placing two teams in the tournament and will assist with overall tournament functions and official rules.A trophy presentation will immediately follow the Championship game. Captain Thomas Foster (240) 429-0145 will be available at the tournament for any additional information.
