NOTES: Anytime codes conflict, the most restrictive code applies as interpreted by the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction). The 2003 version of the "International Residential Code" may require that existing homes, when requesting permit for remodeling, upgrade their smoke detection, depending on the scope of the work. The Department of Permitting Services can provide direction for this.
