CLASS SPECIFICATION

 

POLICE OFFICER CANDIDATE

 

DEFINITION OF CLASS:

This is an instructional-level position, the incumbent of which undergoes formalized training in law enforcement methods and procedures both in the classroom and in the field.

An employee in this class is assigned to an Entrance Level Training Class and instructed in a variety of subject matters for varying lengths of time. The employee's proficiency is measured through written, oral, and practical examinations, the cumulative total of which will normally determine an incumbent's retention as a sworn officer at a level immediately above Police Officer Candidate. Employment under this class includes training which is conducted on a rotating shift basis as well as weekends and holidays. Employees may be exposed to armed and dangerous persons. Instructions are explicit and supervision is provided continuously.

An employee does not earn permanent career status while serving in this class nor does the time spent serving in this class count toward permanent career status in a promoted position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)

Attends assigned classes, prepares lessons, and takes examinations.

Works "on the job" as a patrol officer integrating that which has been learned in the classroom to real life situations in the field.

Performs related duties in an "instructor-student" relationship as required, including those generally associated with journey level sworn officer positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: No previous experience in law enforcement is required.

Education: Satisfactory completion of an Associate of Arts Degree or equivalent.

Equivalency: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to follow oral and written directions; write routine reports and correspondence; read technical literature; and calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Ability to pursue, apprehend, and restrain suspects and defend oneself from physical attack.

Possess emotional stability and personal integrity as determined by an investigation conducted by the Montgomery County Government.

Other:

Be a U. S. citizen and not less than 21 years old as of the anticipated first day of employment as a sworn Police Officer.

LICENSE:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Individuals appointed to this class will be required to serve a probationary period of one year, during which time performance will be carefully evaluated. Continuation in this class will be contingent upon successful completion of the probationary period.
