TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN I
DEFINITION OF CLASS:
This is developmental level, semi-skilled work involving the more standard and recurring types of assembly, modification, installation, testing, maintenance and field and bench repair projects involving a variety of traffic control, traffic monitoring and traveler information equipment, devices and subsystems (e.g., traffic signal heads, wiring, poles, cabinets, span cable, pedestrian signals, school flasher signal assemblies, variable message signs, lane control and channelization devices, fiber optic signs, traffic advisory radio system, traffic video surveillance cameras, etc.). Contacts are limited to the crew to which employees are assigned, the purpose of which is to receive and provide information. This class of work may entail some public service/assistance, but it is incidental to the primary focus of the work performed.
An employee in this class is expected to independently perform recurring assignments. The supervisor provides specific instruction for new, difficult or developmental-type assignments. The employee is expected to refer problems and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for help. Review of the work increases with more difficult assignments if the employee has not previously performed similar assignments. Guidelines include standard operating procedures, normal trade practices, technical manuals, equipment manufacturers' instructions, and code requirements which are closely followed to complete assigned tasks. The work is made complex by the many different steps required to assemble, install, test and maintain or make routine repairs on traffic control equipment and devices. The work affects the reliability of equipment operations supported by the Transportation System Technical Center. Strict observance of safety precautions and procedures is required since much of the work involves working with and around electrical voltage and high powered equipment and/or working from extended heights. Employees in this class must possess good strength and agility in order to recurringly lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and to be able to occasionally maneuver objects up to 100 pounds.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)
Performs bench, shop and field maintenance and repair work on traffic control, traffic monitoring and traveler information equipment, devices, and sub-systems within capabilities and skills using hand and power tools of the trade.
Receives formal and on-the-job instruction and training from a journeyman staff at the Technical Center or from the Unit supervisor to acquire and develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of the trade.
Uses knowledge of mathematics to learn how to plan and lay out work.
Cleans and otherwise maintains hand and power tools and equipment of the trade.
Performs related duties as required.
Experience: One year of general experience in the area of electrical wiring or electronics.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of course work which demonstrates a basic understanding of electronics.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work inside and outside and from extended heights either near or in midst of moving traffic.
Ability to periodically wear and use personal protective clothing and equipment as required.
Ability to prepare simple sketches and material lists.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to independently lift, push, and pull heavy pieces of communication equipment and tools occasionally weighing up to 100 pounds.
Must be free from colorblindness.
Ability to attend meetings and/or perform assignments at locations outside the office.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license appropriate to the equipment operated by an employee in this class, in accordance with Maryland State Commercial Driver's License requirements.
Individuals appointed or promoted to a position in this class will be required to serve a probationary period of six months. Performance will be carefully evaluated during the probationary period. Continuation in this class will be contingent upon successful completion of the probationary period.
