Maryland Benefit Corporation Legislation
In 2010, Maryland became the first state in the U.S. to enact legislation enabling a Maryland corporation to become a benefit corporation by modifying its charter to include the creation of certain public benefits as one of its purposes. This new class of corporations, which will soon be expanded to include LLCs, positions Maryland as a national leader in the movement of for-profit businesses ‘doing well by doing good.’
