Foreclosure Prevention - Communicating with Your Lender

Information your lender will need

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Email address
  • Your loan number
  • Your interest rate
  • The term of your loan (number of years)
  • Whether you have equity
  • The amount of your regular mortgage payment
  • The amount of housing-related debt (including taxes, insurance, condo fees)
  • Whether finds are being escrowed for taxes and insurance
  • whether you have received any notices, especially of a foreclosure date
  • Current income and expenses
  • Reason for default
  • Is the loan in bankrupty? (If yes, you will need to provide the names, location, case number and attorney)
  • Is the property owner-occupied?

Hardship Letter Checklist
Your lender will want you to write a letter explaining why your mortgage is late.  Reasons may include:

  • The amount of mortgage increased
  • Unemployed
  • Cut in play
  • Job relocation
  • Business failure divorce
  • Separation
  • Death of spouse
  • death of family member
  • Illness
  • Medical bills
  • Other bills
