Smart Meter Pilot Program

A New Single Space Parking Meter that accepts coins and credit cards is coming to Norfolk Avenue in Bethesda on March 2012.

Norfolk Avenue was selected for a three month Pilot Test of new IPS Group Credit Card Enabled parking meters. 41 new parking meters that accept both coins and credit/debit cards (with Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover logos) will temporarily replace 41 existing single space meters on Norfolk Avenue (both sides of the street) between Woodmont Avenue and Del Ray Avenue beginning March 2012. Click here for map of pilot area.

Some Primary Features of the Smart Meter Include:

  • Provide more payment options for parking customers; including coins, credit cards and Pay-by-Cell
  • Solar powered battery system
  • Highly visible expiration time indicator
  • Real-time communication
  • Web-based management system
  • The meters are designed to be retrofitted onto single space meter heads for ease of installation.

Smart Meters are easy to use:

View parking rates, hours, time limits and other important info on the SmartMeter’s illuminated display.
Insert and remove your credit/debit card. (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover)
Using the keypad, select your payment amount with the blue [+] or [-] buttons.
Press green [OK] button to confirm your amount, or red [CANCEL] button to cancel your transaction. If neither button is pressed after 35 seconds, the meter will attempt to authorize the amount shown onscreen.
Wait for the card authorization.
The meter will show the amount of paid time approved and meter expiration time or will request another card.
Or just pay with coins!
