401 Hungerford Drive Garage
410 Hungerford Dr Rockville, MD 20850
Project Description
The project provides for the design and renovation of the 401 Hungerford Drive parking garage. The concrete decks in the three story garage are experiencing moderate to severe deterioration. A study completed in June 2005 recommended the removal and replacement of the deteriorated concrete, removal and installation of new expansion joints, repair of the stair tower cracking, new lighting, seismic reinforcement, storm water management improvements, application of a traffic bearing membrane, concrete sealer and improvements to the parking lot.
This project has been completed. The Final Release of Retainage documents have been completed. Finance processed the documents on 12/22/2011 for payment. This competes final payment under this contract.

Typical view of incipient floor slab deterioration. Note pattern of small, isolated spalls over individual rebar.
Typical view of more advanced floor slab deterioration. Note pattern of larger area of spalls over a series of rebar.
Typical view of severe floor slab deterioration. Note corrosion on completely exposed rebar adjacent to vehicle wheel, and deteriorated concrete reduced to rubble.
View of typical spalling on Level 3.
Failed concrete and concrete patches at bottom of entrance ramp to Level 3. Note multiple joints due to a series of patch repairs. Cause of cracking believed to be thermal movement restrained at ramp bottom.
Cracking of column beneath entrance ramp to Level 3. Cause of cracking believed to be thermal movement exacerbated by weathering.
Cracking of concrete beam/columns at top of Level 2 entrance ramp. Note that cracks have occurred through the beam/column connection. Cause of cracking believed to be thermal movement restrained at slab-on-grade ramp to supported ramp.
Diagonal cracking in masonry at stair tower.
Crack in clay brick at stair tower. Cause of cracking believed to be thermal movement of garage restrained by stair tower.
Localized failure of southeast column adjacent to WMATA right of way.
Typical view of South Elevation
Typical view of North Elevation.
Typical view of North Elevation at entrance ramp from street to Level 3.
Typical view of West Elevation with entrance ramp to Level 3.
Typical view of West Elevation with entrance ramp to Level 2.
Surface deterioration of vertical walls at Level 3. Note fine surface cracking, similar to ASR induced cracking, and spall of rebar.
