Obtaining the Deed to Your House

Have you received a letter offering to obtain a certified copy of the deed to your house? You should know how easy it is to obtain one yourself before you decide whether to pay a private company to do it for you.

The Federal Citizen Information Center (part of the U.S. General Services Administration) advises readers of its Managing Household Records article to have a system for filing copies of important household documents, including a copy of your deed.

If your property is located in MontgomeryCounty, you can order a copy of your deed by going to the Land Records Department of the Clerk's Office in Montgomery County Circuit Court (50 Maryland Avenue, Room 218, Rockville, Maryland 20850, 240-777-9477).They will give you the book and page number (liber and folio) to enable you to get copies from the Duplications Department. Copies are 50 cents a page (most deeds are about five pages) and if you need a certified copy, it is an additional $5.00 per document. They have also advised the Office of Consumer Protection that this process can be completed by mail.
