The Emergency Communications Center

The Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Police 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center (9-1-1 ECC), is a nationally recognized center, the largest in Maryland and one of the 50 largest in the United States.

Montgomery County inaugurated a new 9-1-1 Center in July 2003 incorporating all new state-of-the-art technology systems. The equipment includes: a 9-1-1 Emergency and Non-Emergency Telephone system, Computer Aided Dispatch system, 800 MHz radio system, Graphical Information (mapping) System, Automatic Vehicle Location via Global Position Satellite system, Mobile Data Terminal system and other ancillary systems.

Personnel of the 9-1-1 ECC are the “1st of the First Responders” with whom the public has contact in times of emergency.  In 2004 the 9-1-1 ECC received over 900,000 calls for service from the public. Of those calls, 610,000 were emergency calls and 307,000 were non-emergency calls for service.

The role of the 9-1-1 ECC personnel is very challenging and rewarding.  The job requires significant knowledge, skill and ability in responding to citizen need and dispatching police officers. The work is fast paced, time critical, stressful and demanding and requires good communications skills, the ability to multi-task and resource management skills.

Personnel of the 9-1-1 ECC have a job like no other.  It is a rewarding career for people who want a job providing personal satisfaction derived from assisting the public in their time of need.  Great pride can be taken in being part of the Montgomery County Department of Police.
