SORRT: 2003 Non-Residential Excellence in Recycling Award

 Awards given by Solid Waste Services

  1. Business or Individual: American Postal Workers Union Health Plan

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: As in years past, the American Postal Workers Union Health Plan continues to have an excellent recycling program and once again went above and beyond the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by achieving a 79 percent recycling rate for 2002.

  2. Business or Individual: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association continues to excel in their recycling program. In addition to expanding their buy recycled program during 2002, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recycled more than 65 percent of their waste. In addition to recycling the required materials, ASHA recycled computers, wood pallets and toner cartridges.

  3. Business or Individual: Balmar Printing

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Balmar Printing continues to excel in their recycling efforts by improving their recycling rate from 81 percent in 2001 to an outstanding 92 percent in 2002.

  4. Business or Individual: Burlington Coat Factory Store #303

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: The efforts of management and employees at Burlington Coat Factory Store #303 have pushed them above the County’s 50 percent recycling goal to a recycling rate of 61 percent in 2002.

  5. Business or Individual: Calvert Group, Ltd.

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Calvert Group, Ltd, a tenant in an office building at 4550 Montgomery Avenue in Bethesda recycled 77 percent of their waste in 2002. In addition, Calvert Group is committed to waste reduction, recycling and buying recycled. Calvert group started buying recycled efforts in 1982 and started their recycling program in 1984.

  6. Business or Individual: EU Services

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: EU Services continues to increase their recycling efforts and increased their recycling rate from 87 percent in 2001 to 89 percent in 2002. In addition to the required materials, EU Services also recycles plastic shrink wrap, toner cartridges and pallets.

  7. Business or Individual: Euro Motorcars

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: In 2002, Euro Motorcars recycled the required materials along with voluntarily recycling other materials such as used motor oil and antifreeze to bring their overall recycling rate to an impressive 88 percent. Euro Motorcars also has an impressive buy recycled program by purchasing oil absorbent pads, towels, tissue paper and more that are made with recycled content.

  8. Business or Individual: G Street Fabrics

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: G Street Fabrics increased their recycling rate in 2002 to 72 percent from 40 percent in 2001. In addition to their recycling program, G Street Fabrics has a successful waste reduction program. They use their shredded paper as packing materials and they make notepads from scrap paper.

  9. Business or Individual: Homeshine Furniture

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Homeshine Furniture just began their recycling program in January 2002, and for the entire year, Homeshine Furniture recycled 57 percent of their waste.

  10. Business or Individual: Jones Lang LaSalle (One Bethesda Center)

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: As property manager for One Bethesda Center, Jones Lang LaSalle is committed to recycling and has used educational materials from the SORRT Program to successfully develop a recycling program that resulted in a 57 percent recycling rate for One Bethesda Center.

  11. Business or Individual: K-Mart Store #4860

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: By recycling all of the cardboard boxes that came into this store, K-Mart Store #4860 recycled 87 percent of its total waste stream in 2002. In addition, they also recycle car batteries and have a reuse program for their pallets.

  12. Business or Individual: Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: In addition to recycling the County’s required materials resulting in a 64 percent recycling rate in 2002, Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters in Bethesda also sent 70,000 pounds of computers, over 500 pounds of batteries and hundreds of toner cartridges for recycling.

  13. Business or Individual: Lockheed Martin Mission Systems (9211, 9221, 9231 Corporate Blvd., Rockville)

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: In addition to achieving a 57 percent recycling rate in 2002, Lockheed Martin Mission Systems recycled their wood pallets and over 8,000 pounds of computer hardware.

  14. Business or Individual: McShea Management (5 Choke Cherry Rd)

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: As a property management company for several buildings in Montgomery County, McShea Management’s commitment to improving the recycling programs at their buildings resulted in a 56 percent recycling rate for their building at 5 Choke Cherry Road in 2002.

  15. Business or Individual: MedImmune, Inc.

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: MedImmune, Inc. exceeded the County’s 50 percent recycling goal in 2002 by recycling 53 percent of their waste.

  16. Business or Individual: Middlebrook Grocery Discount Beer and Wine

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: After beginning their recycling program in March 2002, Middlebrook Grocery Discount Beer and Wine recycled an amazing 88 percent of their waste for the remainder of the year.

  17. Business or Individual: Montgomery County Department of Police

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: The commitment of the Department of Police to increase their recycling efforts resulted in an increase of recycling from just over 82 percent in 2001 to over 89 percent in 2002 from their many stations and facilities. The Police recycling program also includes its uniform recycling program which results in 7,000 to 8,000 pounds of additional materials each year.

  18. Business or Individual: Moore & Associates (10720, 10750, 10770 Columbia Pike)

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Moore and Associates, a property management company for several buildings in the County reported that they employees located in their office buildings located at 10720, 10750, and 10770 Columbia Pike exceeded the County’s 50 percent recycling goal and recycled 67 percent of their waste in 2002.

  19. Business or Individual: National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc.

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: The National Association of Securities Dealers exceeded the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by recycling more than 56 percent of their waste last year.

  20. Business or Individual: NCR Corporation

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: NCR Corporation continues to exceed the County’s recycling goal by achieving a 67 percent recycling rate in 2002.

  21. Business or Individual: National Institute of Standards & Technology

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: The National Institute of Standards and Technology increased their recycling rate from 65 percent in 2001 to just over 70 percent in 2002. In addition, the NIST Environmental Team hosts an annual Earth Day event to promote waste reduction and recycling to all staff and to the children of NIST’s daycare center.

  22. Business or Individual: Pinnacle Printing

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Pinnacle Printing, with just 18 employees, achieved a 68 percent recycling rate for 2002.

  23. Business or Individual: Scuderi Auto Body

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Scuderi Auto Body continues to exceed the County’s 50 percent recycling goal by recycling 56 percent of their waste stream in 2002.

  24. Business or Individual: Smith Lithograph

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Once again, Smith Lithograph has demonstrated its commitment to recycling by recycling a 98 percent recycling rate in 2002. Smith Lithograph has maintained a recycling rate of over 90 percent during the past several years.

  25. Business or Individual: Spaulding & Slye International Colliers (1801 Rockville Pike)

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Spaulding and Slye Colliers management and building engineers for 1801 Rockville Pike continue to monitor and improve their recycling program. As a result of their hard work and dedication, the recycling rate at 1801 Rockville Pike was 66 percent for 2002.

  26. Business or Individual: The Bureau of National Affairs

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Once again, the commitment of staff at the Bureau of National Affairs achieved a recycling rate of 93 percent in 2002. In addition to the required materials, they also recycled used CD’s and 3.5 inch diskettes and reused old binders and packing materials.

  27. Business or Individual: American Occupational Therapy Association

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Again, the American Occupational Therapy Association went above and beyond the County’s recycling goal and recycled 61 percent of their waste in 2002. AOTA also recycled computers and toner cartridges in 2002.

  28. Business or Individual: United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: As part of its environmental commitment, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission hosts an annual Earth Day event to inform employees of their waste reduction, buying recycled and recycling efforts. NRC sent over 2,000 pounds of office supplies to its reuse program, donated 48,000 pounds of computer hardware and achieved a 60 percent recycling rate in 2002, up from just over 45 percent in 2001.

  29. Business or Individual: WESTAT

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: WESTAT improved its recycling efforts in 2002 and as a result, they recycled 56 percent of their waste in 2002. This is an increase of 6 percent in just one year.

  30. Business or Individual: Willard Packaging Company

    Award Type: Excellence in Recycling

    Reason for being recognized: Willard Packaging Group recycled its office paper, cardboard boxes, newspaper, and aluminum cans in 2002 which resulted in an 88 percent recycling rate.
