Trucks drive from the compactors to the rail yard in
back of the Transfer Station, where the containers filled
with compacted trash are lifted onto trains by Mi-Jack
cranes. The refuse continues its journey by rail to
the Montgomery County Resource Recovery
Facility. Using trains to move the refuse from the
centrally located Transfer Station to the Resource Recovery
Facility saves fuel costs, reduces vehicle emissions,
and mreduces truck traffic. A portion of the yard waste
destined for the Dickerson
Composting Facility is also handled here.
