Awards: 2001 Non-Residential Most Improved Recycling Program

* Awards given by Solid Waste Services

Awarded to individuals and organizations that have made significant improvements in the structure and awareness of their recycling programs.

  • Royce Doctor, Ledo Pizza, Germantown, MD
Mr. Doctor works 7-days a week at Ledo's. In addition to all of his other duties, he runs and oversees the recycling efforts at the restaurant. The first time we visited, little or no recycling was being done. After successfully working with Mr. Doctor, recycling awareness increased. On follow-up visits, recycling containers are full of good recyclable materials.
  • Nellis Corporation, Rockville, MD, is the management company for two shopping centers that we've visited. This management company worked to improve the conditions of these two shopping centers, Festival at Muddy Branch and Germantown Square, that had really poor recycling participation from tenants. As a result of their efforts, along with technical support from County staff, there has been a remarkable increase in recycling and awareness of tenants.
  • The Magic Cue, Germantown, MD
During our initial visits, there was very little recycling being done. After working with the management company, containers were immediately placed on the property. Then we worked with the managers of the Magic Cue, and since then, additional follow up visits found that all containers were filled with good recyclables.
  • Rockville Center/255 Rockville Pike
This program has greatly increased its recycling from 12- 15 % rate to 43-46 %. Recycling efforts have been so successful that this property has eliminated 1 8-yd. trash dumpster.
