2010 Multi-Family Property Recycling Awards

Awards given by Solid Waste Services

Excellence in Recycling

Awarded to multi-family properties, property management companies, and resident recycling committees that established and/or contributed to excellent recycling programs

  1. Ingleside at King Farm: Ingleside at King Farm, a new property in Rockville, is off to a great start, recycling 73 percent of its solid waste in 2009 as a result of its comprehensive recycling program.

  2. Leisure World of Maryland: Leisure World’s eighty-five hundred residents and staff remain committed to recycling year after year, as demonstrated by recycling 53 percent of their waste in 2009.

  3. The Bennington at Silver Spring: The residents at the Bennington recycled 53 percent of their waste in 2009, in response to the many convenient aspects of the property’s recycling program.

  4. The Riviera of Chevy Chase: At the Riviera of Chevy Chase, recycling containers are placed next to all trash containers, making it easy for the residents to recycle 65 percent of their waste, which they did in 2009.

Outstanding Improvement in Recycling

Awarded to multi-family properties that made significant improvements to their recycling programs

  1. Eastern Village Cohousing: The residents at Eastern Village Cohousing in Silver Spring are engaged in their recycling program; creating unique recycling signage is one way they helped their community reach a 46 percent recycling rate.

  2. Falkland Chase Apartments: The recycling rate at Falkland Chase in Silver Spring almost doubled to 25 percent in 2009 as a result of their residents’ tremendous response to increased recycling capacity to accommodate cardboard and scrap metal.

  3. Highland House West Apartment Homes: Highland House West in Chevy Chase has seen its recycling rate rise to 36 percent in 2009 as a result of excellent communication with residents and overall recycling and waste reduction activities including recycling or reusing carpeting, electronics, clothing, books, and ink cartridges.

  4. Oak Hill Apartments: The residents at Oak Hill Apartments in Silver Spring recycled 34 percent of their waste in 2009, up more than 10 percent from 2008, as a result of additional recycling capacity for residents to recycle mixed paper and commingled materials.

  5. Park Bethesda Apartments: The recycling rate at Park Bethesda Apartments more than tripled to 27 percent in 2009 as a result of updated recycling signage and additional recycling capacity due to increased resident recycling participation.

  6. The Fenestra at Rockville Town Square: The new management team at the Fenestra at Rockville Town Square made improving their recycling program a priority.  As a result of their efforts, the recycling rate increased 15 percent in one year to 37 percent in 2009.

  7. The Gallery at White Flint: From innovative reuse practices such as a community container for packing peanuts to well-maintained recycling collection areas, the staff at the Gallery at White Flint makes recycling easy for their residents.  Last year, the property achieved a 32 percent recycling rate, up 10 percent from 2008.

  8. Westchester Rockville Station: As a new property, Westchester Rockville Station ensured its residents were greeted with a comprehensive recycling program, including apartment-sized recycling bins and sufficient capacity for their cardboard moving boxes.   They recycled 22 percent of their waste in 2009.

Outstanding Individual Achievement in Recycling

Awarded to individuals at multi-family properties for their outstanding efforts to improve recycling programs and/or increase resident recycling awareness and participation

  1. Jennifer Baker: Ms. Jennifer Baker, Administrative Assistant at the Carleton of Chevy Chase, has spearheaded improvements to the recycling program, increasing the types of materials recycled, creating unique signage, and raising resident awareness through newsletters and notices.

  2. Grandpa Chris Christensen: Grandpa Chris Christensen, a resident of Eton Place, monitors the property’s recycling program daily. He distributes recycling brochures to residents, ensures container labels are legible and sites are clean, and sets an example for his neighbors by breaking down cardboard boxes.

  3. Melvin Crone: As the new resident manager at Round Hill Apartments in Chevy Chase, Mr. Melvin Crone significantly improved the recycling program by adding recycling capacity, distributing apartment-sized recycling bins, and educating the residents about the recycling program.

  4. Hector Cruz: Mr. Hector Cruz, GSI Cleaning Supervisor at the Irene in Chevy Chase, works hard to ensure the recycling program maintains consistently high standards. Mr. Cruz’ positive attitude and dedication to recycling make the difference in this successful program.

  5. Myriam Lemmerman: Ms. Myriam Lemmerman, Activities Director at the Oaks at Four Corners, is passionate about helping her residents participate in the property’s recycling program. She routinely monitors the program, schedules recycling presentations for staff and residents, and distributes updated information.

  6. Laura Seepersad: Beyond her duties at the front desk, Ms. Laura Seepersad serves as the recycling advocate at Silver Spring Towers. Her focus on recycling awareness using move-in packets, newsletters, updated signage, and educational events increases resident recycling participation.

  7. Roslynn Seidenstein: The residents at University Towers benefit from the enthusiasm of fellow resident Ms. Roslynn Seidenstein. Steadily through the years, she has ensured the implementation and maintenance of the property’s recycling program and has helped educate both staff and residents.

  8. Chuck Thornton: Over the past year, Mr. Chuck Thornton, Director of Marketing and Development at Homecrest House, has successfully led the charge for a reinvigorated recycling program.  His educational activities and his energy inspire both staff and residents to recycle more.
