Resource Recovery Facility: Environmental Issues

Air | Water | Traffic | Noise | Ash

Ash

The ash resulting from the combustion process is directed to a pit, where it is stored. Five days per week the ash is removed from the pit with overhead cranes, shown in this picture, and directed to the ash handling equipment.

The ash handling equipment removes the larger items, as well as the recyclable metals. The metals are directed to containers, which are transported by truck to scrap metal recycling facilities.

The remaining ash is loaded into containers, which are transported by rail to the Old Dominion Landfill in Virginia. There, it is processed to remove additional metals and separated into a fine material (used as alternative to fill dirt or landfill cover) and an aggregate used in road base for internal landfill roads.
