Feed Chute

From the feed chute, waste is pushed by hydraulic ram feeders onto a stoker grate. The MARTIN Reverse-Reciprocating Stoker Grate is sloped downward and is composed of alternate rows of fixed and moving grate bars. The grate bars push upward against the natural downward movement of the waste bed. This constant movement essentially causes the waste material to tumble backwards a short distance, igniting incoming material. This ensures complete combustion of all waste. Fire on the grates This is a view of the fire on the grates in the furnace. Operators adjust air and fuel feed and tumbling rates to maintain at least 1800 degrees F at all times in the furnace just above this fire. Temperatures are typically in excess of 2000 degrees F at the Montgomery County facility.
