Rotten Food Cleanup for Residents

Until your next trash collection, what should you do with all the food that has gone bad because your power was out?

  • Put the containers of bad food into your freezer once power returns, and keep them there until your next collection day.
    • Placing these items into your freezer will slow the decomposition process in place, and should also neutralize any odor.
  • Pour any liquids which are no longer good down the drain.
  • Remember to rinse and recycle any recyclable food or beverage packaging.
  • Double-bag in trash bags, tie tightly, and place bags into sealed trash cans with tight-fitting lids outside your home.

To dispose your food items immediately

To dispose your food items immediately, bring them to the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station.
